This position reports to the Food Services Manager.

Dietary Aid personnel shall have their working hours scheduled as legislated by the Ministry of Long-Term Care and according to the Long-Term Care Act 2007 and the Ontario Regulations 79/10.

Qualifications

All food service workers (Dietary Aids) hired on or after the day this section comes into force shall have successfully completed or are enrolled in a Food Service Worker program at a college established under the Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Act, 2002 or a Food Service Worker program provided by a registered private career college and approved by the Superintendent of Private Career Colleges under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005;

The Home shall cease to employ as a food service worker (Dietary Aid) a
person who was required to be enrolled in a Food Service Worker training
program at an established college as listed in the Ontario Colleges of Applied
Arts and Technology Act if the person fails to successfully complete the
program within 3 years of being hired.

The Home shall ensure that food service workers (Dietary Aids) who were
employed at the Home before this section came into force, and who do not
have the qualifications required, complete a food handler training program
provided by Public Health of Ontario within 3 months after coming into force
of this section, unless they meet the requirements sooner.

Students hired on a part-time/seasonal basis, must have successfully
completed a food handler training program provided by Public Health of
Ontario.

A nutrition manager who is a member of the Canadian Society of Nutrition
Management or a Registered Dietitian does not have to complete the food
service training program

A Cook with Chef training or Culinary Management program does not have to
complete the food Services worker program.

An employee who has the post-secondary diploma in food and nutrition
management or post-secondary degree in food and nutrition does not have to
complete the food Services Worker Program.

Must have an aptitude for working with the elderly.
Able to communicate verbally and in writing in English and to follow written
and verbal instructions.

Multilingual facility an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Transfers food into the hot food cart and prepares for meal service. Familiar with the daily posted menu and alternatives choices.
  • Ensures delivery of food carts to the Unit from the kitchen and return after meals.
  • Prepares and plating the food according to the nutrition care plan and the
    Residents’ preferences.
  • Completes set-up and clearing of tables for all meals.
  • Makes coffee and tea. Pours juice, milk, etc. Sets out condiments which
    accompany the meal (e.g., ketchup, mustard, jam).
  • Serves food onto the residents’ plates.
  • Ensures that the food is appropriate for the Residents’ diets and food preferences.
  • Makes toast as required.
  • Assists with the service of desserts and hot beverages.
  • Heats any special food requirements, strains or thickens foods as needed for diet.
  • Serves one course at a time, giving residents adequate time to eat without being rushed.
  • Washes and stores all dishes appropriately after meals.
  • Provides set-up service for tray delivery as per nursing orders.
  • Sets up for nourishment service.
  • Ensures that unit is stocked with supplies for next meal.
  • Provides for safety in provision of food services.
  • Uses equipment safety.
  • Maintains a sanitary and clean working environment and is familiar with infection control techniques.
  • Completes special duty cleaning as per schedule.
  • Receive, stores and manages the inventory of Residents’ food and food service supplies.
  • Provides for good personal hygiene, neat and clean appearance, safe foot attire, hear net and good personal health in the work place.
  • Adjusting to a warm and cold working environment.
  • Standing, walking with stooping, bending, lifting, moving wheeled equipment, pushing/pulling, sweeping, mopping and other related cleaning duties.
  • Performs all other tasks as requested by the supervisor/cook.
  • Cleans hot food truck and pantry equipment and counters.
